(London) Times: Anglican primates to discuss "two-tier" communion

Archbishops of the Anglican Communion worldwide will tomorrow discuss a proposal that will allow the church to remain united as one body in spite of schismatic differences over the ordination of homosexuals and the blessing of gay marriages.

Archbishops of the 38 provinces worldwide are beginning a week-long meeting in Alexandria, Egypt where they will discuss a proposal to allow Anglican churches to remain “in communion” with other provinces that refuse to sign up to a new “covenant” or unity document.

Discussions to draft the new covenant, which sets out sanctions for provinces that breach accepted Anglican norms on issues such as gay consecrations, are expected to be complete by the summer with the covenant signed up to by provinces and ready for implementation within five years.

  1. A Senior Priest says:

I’m fine with that. AND parallel jurisdictions, too. One N. American first tier (ACNA), and one N. American second tier (TEC). Perfect. Then let TEC spin off into theological space where no Gnostic Arian has gone before.

  2. Brien says:

[blockquote]Although not on the official agenda, the Primates are also expected to discuss among themselves proposals by conservatives in the US for a new province to run parallel with the existing Episcopal Church. The Archbishop of Wales Dr Barry Morgan has condemned these plans as “nonsense”, warning it would splinter the church. He has warned that he would oppose such a plan “with every fibre of my being.”

In an interview with The Times, Dr Morgan said the concept of a new province in the US “makes no ecclesiological or theological sense.” [/blockquote]
Really? And so then, Dr Morgan, this two-tier proposal does make ecclesiological or theological sense? I’m missing something. Looks like the latest recipe for Anglican Fudge.

  3. Phil says:

Let’s see, two tiers, with no difference (at least as noted in the article) in how they’re treated. Yes, that would be Anglican Fudge.

  4. Clueless says:

Ah. “Separate but Equal” for Gnostic Gays and Orthodox Anglicans. That’s always worked So Well in the past. And if everybody would just shut up about the Gospel, (being “Out” is okay since it’s “You”) folks can migrate from the Communion without the pension plan to the Communion that has one if they just remember to “respect” everybody. Evangelism under a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” clause should certainly double the membership by 2020.

Why do we bother to feed bishops?
